July 2009 Problem Solved!
Identifying Spiral Failure:
Spiral failure is defined as a type of O-ring failure caused when a seal becomes “hung-up” at one point on its diameter, sliding and rolling at the same time. It twists as the seal device cycles, causing the ring to develop a series of deep spiral cuts on the surface. This type of failure is often found on long stroke hydraulic piston seals and rod seals.

March 2008 Problem Solved - Compression Set
Compression Set - O-Ring Failure
Compression set is a term referring to the flattening or loss of the original, circular shape
on all contact surfaces of an elastomeric seal. As one of the most common causes of o-ring failure, compression set can be attributed to various conditions, such as excessive squeeze, incompatible fluid, improper gland design and gland overfill. However, the most common cause is a low quality elastomer with poor set resistance.

Parker Diamond Seal™ Engineered Seals Divions
Greater seal pressure in narrow straight-walled grooves for greater design flexibility. Inherently self-retaining, Parker Diamond Seal™ molded seals are designed to be used in molded or machined grooves for face sealing applications. A smaller footprint and narrow cross section result in high seal pressures, low closure forces, and narrow groove width requirements. The unique design optimizes material usage, making Parker Diamond Seal molded seals highly cost efficient. In addition, they are particularly effective when mating surfaces are less than perfect
___________________________________________________________________________
Parker H-Seal™ Engineered Seals Division
Greater seal pressure with redundant sealing beads and retention capabilities. Parker H-Seal™ molded seals can be used in molded or machined grooves for face seal applications. They will fit traditional dovetail grooves or straight-walled grooves. If desired, Parker H-Seal molded seals can be self-retaining with the addition of retention ribs. The redundant sealing beads offer stability and resistance to twisting, which is particularly important with large profile seals. The small contact points of Parker H-Seal molded seals generate high seal pressures, making them particularly effective when mating surfaces are less than perfect.

November2007 Bulletin12 Engineered Solutions
Application: Product development activities where elastomeric components are used.
Problem: Traditional product development involves prototyping multiple designs to find an adequate solution. In simple cases or where nearly identical solutions have been developed
in the past, only one or two prototype iterations may be needed. However, when developing
new or substantially enhanced products, time-to-market and development costs can be drastically increased by the need for many prototype cycles and experimentation.

September2007 E0740 Problem Solved!
Nuclear Technology Radiation Resistance
One of the most critical properties of an o-ring being exposed to radiation is its compression set. When a seal is exposed to gamma radiation, compression set is the most severly affected. Elastomers which are compounded for exposure to radiation must also pass stringent quality and material tests. Additionally, the elastomer must be compatible with the contact medium under the working environment (temperature, pressure, etc.).

August2007 Outsourced O-Ring Materials
A Closer Look Outsourced O-Ring Materials
Quality and cost are two key factors that drive customer satisfaction. Consumers demand low prices while manufacturers strive for quality. With rising raw material costs, this combination of quality and affordability has driven global product to the forefront. Numerous industries take advantage of outsourced product to keep profit high and costs low. However, massive recalls on China made products are raising concerns on how reliable outsourced product truly is.

June2007 Bulletin11 Engineered Solutions
Application: Parker ESD has developed a reinforced seal for an axial seal joint where an inside support wall is not practical.
Problem: An axial seal was required to seal water between three concentric components in a newly developed shower head. Packaging constraints dictated a very narrow sealing area with no support on the inside face of the seal. Traditional seal designs were extruding out of the seal gap into the water stream and failing.

May2007 Bulletin10 Engineered Solutions
Engineered Solutions - Parker Engineered Seals Division
Summary: Parker ESD has developed a family of fluorocarbon compounds with excellent resistance to fluids which degrade traditional fluorocarbon elastomers.
Problem: Applications exist where multiple fluids contact a single seal, while other applications use similar seals in various fluids. Having a single, compatible seal material is highly desirable in these applications for design flexibility and to prevent premature seal failures.

March2007 Bulletin8 Engineered Solutions
Engineered Solutions - Parker Engineered Seals Division
Application: Tube seals for fluid & gas applications under positive or negative pressure (Pressure or Vacuum).
Problem: Sealing of joints between tubes & bore housings historically has been accomplished by using conventional compression seals. The previous seal option has only one seal contact point which is not self energizing & is entirely dependant on rubber compression.

March2007 Bulletin7-II Engineered Solutions Engineered Solutions - Parker Engineered Seals Division
Application: Automatic transmission high pressure hydraulic circuits.
Problem : Recently developed automatic transmissions have high pressure fluid transfer sealing requirements that must bridge a gap
___________________________________________________________________________
March2007 Bulletin7 Engineered Solutions
Engineered Solutions - Parker Engineered Seals Division
Application: Fuel Tank Seal
Problem: Many fuel tanks have minimal overlap between the sending unit and fuel tank flanges. As a result, misalignment between components or out-of-round flanges create a need for an offset between seal beads that contact the two components. Traditional seals cannot generate seal pressure with offset beads since rubber twists easily. In addition, installation of the sending unit can twist the seal causing critical damage. In extreme cases, the seal may be twisted out of position and into the fuel tank.
