Compression set is a term referring to the flattening or loss of the original, circular shape
on all contact surfaces of an elastomeric seal. As one of the most common causes of o-ring failure, compression set can be attributed to various conditions, such as excessive squeeze, incompatible fluid, improper gland design and gland overfill. However, the most common cause is a low quality elastomer with poor set resistance.

Aerospace specification AMS 7257C provides the minimum requirements a material must
meet to be considered capable of long term exposure up to 550°F and exposure to petroleum oils, jet fuel and phosphate ester hydraulic fluids.. Aerospace applications subject to this specification have extremely high temperatures and are exposed to various environments. Because many applications demand excellent seal performance in extreme environments, customers may choose to specify a material that exceeds the AMS 7257C standard.

Application: Fuel Tank Seal
Problem: Many fuel tanks have minimal overlap between the sending unit and fuel tank flanges. As a result, misalignment between components or out-of-round flanges create a need for an offset between seal beads that contact the two components. Traditional seals cannot generate seal pressure with offset beads since rubber twists easily. In addition, installation of the sending unit can twist the seal causing critical damage. In extreme cases, the seal may be twisted out of position and into the fuel tank.

This letter is to inform you of a change to one of Parker Hannifin O-ring Division’s nitrile O-ring materials. The main ingredient used in compound N0506-65 is being eliminated by our supplier, and we have been forced to develop a new recipe that duplicates the performance of N0506-65. The new material is named NM506-65.
