The Situation
A leading global brand in heavy duty diesel filtration experienced two simultaneous problems:
- Their factory lost dimensional control of the casting process valued at $1.3M in out of spec hardware.
- Seal failure.
The Ask
Recommend and supply a new seal that didn’t leak in the “bad” castings
The Solution
Our analysis concluded that tolerance creep on two of the three gland components created a LMC condition that the seal could no longer accommodate. Our proposed change bridged the gap.
The Success
The $1.3M scrapped parts could now be used, the new seal also worked on “in compliance” hardware. New tooling to fix the tolerance issue was no longer required, saving an additional $0.9M costs and a 30 week implementation timeline
